Infectious Diseases

Infectious diseases specialists are doctors who focus on treating illnesses that are caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites. These physicians have studied immunology (how the body fights disease naturally) and epidemiology (how illness spreads) as well as diagnosis and treatment of both common and uncommon infectious diseases. Specialists in infectious diseases are also experts in the use of antibiotics, including the potential dangers associated with their use and overuse. Services include:

  • Diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases
  • Travel medicine
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Antibiotic resistant bacterial infections
  • Hospital acquired infections

Infectious diseases can be passed along in a variety of ways, including:

  • From one person to another
  • Bites from animals or insects
  • Ingesting contaminated food or water
  • Environmental exposure

Vaccines and immunizations can prevent or reduce the severity of some infectious diseases. Frequent hand-washing and limiting contact with people who are sick is also an effective way to reduce the likelihood you’ll get sick.
